Getting paid to take surveys? The shocking truth about the market research industry today!

Paid Surveys

We’ve all seen the ads online. Get Paid To Take Surveys they scream, and for a small fee, you too can get in on the opportunity of a lifetime! But is any of it true? Can you really make money with this?

The facts are actually quite different from what you may have been led to believe. It’s true Market Research is a multi billion dollar industry. Corporations like Wal Mart, Toyota, Olive Garden, and tens of thousands of others spend huge sums trying to figure out what folks like you and I are going to buy with their hard earned cash.

Over 20 years ago, I lived in San Francisco and was a paid survey taker and panel participant. I made between $75 - $175 for a few hours work, usually sitting in a room answering questions and voting on things like product labels, model names, and magazine advertisements.

Back then, the panels were held in small rooms with about 15 or 20 people, while guys in pinstripe suits observed behind one way glass. Once I even got to drive a Porsche 911 incredibly fast, and then got interviewed about it. I can’t even remember if I got paid, but it was probably the most fun survey I ever took!

However, now-a-days, market research is far different, with a majority of the work being done online, and as many as 50,000 participants working on for a single project. You don’t need to live in a big city or be part of a certain profession. Anyone, regardless of income, gender, race, employment, or geographic location can do it.

Of course, online surveys don’t pay nearly as well as live panels and focus groups, but on the other hand, you can do them far more often, several times a week or more. And if you like that sort of thing (and I definitely do), you not only make a few bucks, but you can also have a lot of fun sharing your opinion and then, seeing the fruits of your labor on the supermarket shelf, or in a big magazine ad campaign.

Here are some facts about the opportunity you should know beforehand:

  • You will not get rich with this. Most survey takers make under $100 a month. And while it doesn’t sound like much, it’s great to get paid doing something you enjoy. I consider it my “mad” money to take my wife out to dinner, or get a new CD every now and then

  • You can take as many surveys as you qualify for, and if you sign up with the top companies, you will have plenty of opportunities every month. In fact, you may be surprised how many people care about what you think!

  • Most online surveys are short, and average between 10 and 20 minutes to complete. They pay from $1 to $35, depending on the number of questions. Sometimes there a phone interview as well, and those pay at the higher end of the scale.
Now, for the dark side of the business... While there are many fine companies in the industry, there are also a number to avoid at all costs. You can tell who they are because they ask YOU to pay money to become a survey taker, and there’s absolutely no reason for that at all. You see, survey companies want panelists so badly now-a-days, they are willing to pay for them, not the other way around. A legitimate survey opportunity will NEVER ask you for money to take surveys or participate in focus groups.
